About Chunar

Chunar is an important town in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. The city is near to Varanasi and is famous for pottery and ceramic wares. The historical city saw the reign of many ruling dynasties during both ancient and medieval period. Once occupied by Mughals, it came under the possession of Shershah Suri, the founder of the Suri Empire in India. Hindi is the local language spoken here. The city has a population of 37,185 and a literacy rate of 76.49% . Famous TV series 'Chandrakanta' and the recent movie 'Gangs of Wasseypur' was shot here.

Geography of Chunar

Chunar is located at geographical coordinates of 25.13°North and 82.9°East with an average elevation of 84 meters or 276 feet above the sea level. It is located around 34 km away from Mirzapur and 316 km from the state capital of Lucknow. The city experiences moderate climate. River Ganges waters the land of Chunar.

Transport in Chunar

The city has a very good road and rail connectivity. It is connected by road to all nearby cities and National Highway No. 7 passes through the city. Chunar railway station connects to different major Indian cities like Delhi, Howrah, Tatanagar and Varanasi. Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is the nearest one from here located at a distance of 45 km.

History of Chunar

The ruins of Chunar Fort speaks in volume about the historical legacy of the city. Chunar Fort is said to be constructed by Maharaja Vikramaditya, the King of Ujjain. The fort was constructed in honor of his brother Raja Bharthari who left his body and took Mahasamadhi at this fort. Besides this, some other stories are also related with the fort. The founder of the Mughal dynasty, Babar, stayed here in 1525 AD. The fort came under the rule of Shershah Suri who took its possession by marrying Lad Malika, the widowed wife of Taj Khan Sarang-Khani, the Governor of Ibrahim Lodi. In 1574 AD. Akbar, the grandson of Babur, again captured this fort which remained under Mughal rule till 1772 AD, after which it was captured by East India Company who established in it a depot of Artillery and ammunition. The fort and its vicinity saw skirmishes between the forces of Maharaja Chet Singh of Benaras with British troops under the command of Major Phophan.  The Governor-General of India, Warren Hastings had to once retire to Chunar for safety. He liked the place very much. his residence is still standing. Near it, there is a sundial bearing the inscription.

Tourism in Chunar

There are a couple of popular tourist attractions around Chunar that are worth visiting on anyone's travel here. On your trip to Chunar you can visit the famous Chunar Fort which has a lot of historical significance. The fort on the rocky bank of the Ganges river is spread over an area of 3400 square feet. There is an ancient well in the premises, known as Sonva Mandap, a sun dial and the Samadhi of king Bharthari. There are 1500 year old rock-cut images of Lord Vishnu and other deities. There is a lot to explore in this fort.

Dargah Sharif: Dedicated to Sufi Saint Baba Quasim Suleman, the shrine is located 2 KM away from Chunar on banks of the Holy River Ganga. There is a mosque in the premises and it is built in Mughal style architecture.

Gangeshwar Nath Temple: This is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is visited by thousands of worshippers on a regular basis.

Along with this, it is also common among tourists to visit Varanasi which is a famous pilgrimage center in North India. The city is also dotted with hotels and restaurants to serve the visiting guest. Tourists can opt to stay at famous hotels in Chunar.
